Yuval Steinitz MK

יובל שטייניץ - שר האוצר

Yuval Steinitz was born on 10/4/1958 and educated at Ramot Hashavim.  On joining the IDF, he chose to serve in the Golani Brigade and was assigned to the Brigade’s 12th Battalion (Barak).

After completing his service in the IDF, Steinitz studied for a BA and MA in Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  He also wrote a doctoral thesis on philosophy.

He began to study philosophy at Haifa University and published a number of popular books on this subject, as well as dozens of articles in the daily press in Israel, and in journals in Israel and abroad, on three main subjects:  Israel’s security concept, the strategic considerations of Arab countries, and the relationship between the media and democracy.

In the 1980s he was active in the Peace Now movement, but in 1993 moved to the right, following his criticism of the Oslo Accords.  In 1999 Steinitz ran for the 15th Knesset on the Likud list.  Although the Likud gained 19 mandates and he was number 20 on the list, he entered the Knesset due to the resignation of Netanyahu.  As a member of the 15th Knesset, Steinitz served as Chairman of the Assistant Committee on the Security Concept and a member of the Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee, the Constitution, Law & Justice Committee, and the Committee for Science & Technology.

In the elections for the 18th Knesset he was placed 9th on the Likud list, and was appointed Minister of Finance in the 32nd government.

Steinitz is married with three children.
